Why Health Coaching and what is it anyway?

So you’ve just left the doctor’s office. You’ve received a list of actions you need to take….
Start _________, Stop ___________, increase _________, decrease __________ . You fill in the blank.

You consider what you’ve been told you need to do. You’re not sure if you can. But you need to. So, you make a decision. You will do what you’ve been told to do. The next day you wake up, ready to begin. Either before you begin or once you’ve begun, something happens. Your determination to ‘make’ it happen, dissipates because life is happening and this is actually really hard. You miss a day. Then you miss two. Then two turns into three and the action you know you were told to take, stops, either slowly or quickly, and doesn’t stick.

 

You taking an action, consistently day after day, is a habit.

You want to call your doctor to discuss your challenges but your next appointment isn’t for a few more weeks and you’re embarrassed to admit that you aren’t doing what they told you to do.

Health Coaches Are Masters of Habit Change

Health coaches are masters of habit change. Their primary mission is to work with you to help you make permanent changes in your habits, that will move you to better health. The habits could be to reduce stress, to eat better, to move more, to improve your sleep, drink more water or curb or stop behaviours you know you need to stop, but are having difficulty stopping.

What a health coach isn’t and what they won’t do…..

Health coaches are not Doctors, Registered Dieticians, Nutritionists, Homeopaths or Naturopathic Doctors. They do not diagnose. Health coaches can partner with you and these other professions (that diagnose and prescribe), to help support you make changes happen, in your daily life, that these other professions have prescribed. Health coaches meet you where the rubber meets the road – in your daily life – to help you make the changes you know you need to make.

Why the Transformational Coaching Method (TCM)?
